The Eredivisie is dominated by three clubs, but now and then another team manages to win the title. These stories are among the best in Dutch football.
AZ Alkmaar
AZ won the league in 1980-81 and again in 2008-09, when a well-organised, attacking side surprised the Big Three. The club is also known for a good youth system and forward-thinking management.
FC Twente
Twente, from the eastern city of Enschede, won its first Eredivisie title in 2009-10 under English coach Steve McClaren. It was a major achievement for a club outside the traditional elite.
Why it matters
These successes remind supporters that in football, smart planning, team spirit and a bit of luck can sometimes overcome bigger budgets.
