Total Football, or Totaalvoetbal in Dutch, is one of the most influential ideas in the history of football. It was developed at Ajax and adopted by the Netherlands national team in the 1970s.
The idea
In Total Football, players were not fixed to a single position. Any outfield player could take over the role of a teammate who had moved out of position, which kept the team’s shape intact while allowing fluid movement.
Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff
Coach Rinus Michels built the system, and Johan Cruyff was its greatest player. The Netherlands reached the World Cup final in 1974 and 1978 with this style.
A lasting influence
Cruyff later took the ideas to Barcelona, where they shaped a whole football philosophy. Many of today’s best-known coaches have been influenced by Dutch ideas.
