How the league works
Twenty clubs compete each season, playing each opponent home and away for 38 matches. A win earns three points, a draw one point, and the club with the most points is crowned champion and awarded the Scudetto, the small shield badge worn on the winner’s shirt the following year.
Promotion and relegation
The three lowest clubs are relegated to Serie B, and three clubs from the second division are promoted in their place. The top clubs earn places in European competitions.
